Workforce Development in Healthcare
RHENSOM supports workforce development in the healthcare industry in a variety of ways.
New Visions Program
Students in the New Visions Health Care program spend their senior year at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown or Fox Hospital in Oneonta. This full-day program immerses students in the medical environment through a rotation schedule that places them in 25 hospital departments. They work side by side with doctors, therapists, technicians, and nurses as they explore career options. In addition, students study English 12, Economics, Participation in Government, Physics, and Human Anatomy and Physiology. They learn professional behavior, organization, and independence while working to a high academic standard. RHENSOM provides staff support to this program.
Annual School Nurse Symposium
School Nurse Symposium 2019: Combatting vaping in your school community
Advancing Tobacco Free Communities gave a riveting yet sobering presentation on vaping in school to more than 40 school nurses and allied health professionals in October. Judy Rightmyer, Tricia Terlecky, Patrice Vivirito and Sarah Kraemer are all specialists in tobacco control and community engagement for Advancing Tobacco Free Communities. While there has been improvement in tradition cigarette use among youth, vaping has significantly increased.
In summer 2019, we saw the first evidence of a vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI). More information on the outbreak can be found on the CDC's website. Please check out the following resources for more information about what schools can do to combat vaping:
Medical Grand Rounds/Pediatric Grand Rounds Sponsorship
RHENSOM and our partnering organizations work with our healthcare organizations to sponsor a topic of relevance to our mission. Recent sponsored Grand Rounds topics have included children's dental health, 5-2-1-0 and childhood obesity, and chronic disease self-management.
